The Talk

The following post may contain TMI, just so you know!

Ok you all know that I have been planning on having "The Talk" with Emily. She is most definitely in the beginning stages of puberty and the changes in her body are becoming more and more evident everyday.

I'm not going to lie here. I am nervous about this. I don't know exactly what to say or how much to say for the matter. It's probably a little bit of the "Oh my God, my "baby" is growing up" thing that is holding me back, but I am also questioning whether or not she is ready emotionally for all of this?

The fact of the matter is, she already knows what sex is (well a very basic idea anyway) thanks to some asshole kid on the bus (Sorry, but this is a big thing for me and is one of the reasons why I have often considered homeschooling. The negative influences of other children and the "loss of the innocence" that occurs when they go to school just kills me, but that's a whole other post). When she told me what she knew I kind of told her we would talk about it soon (her sister Katherine was around, not in the same room but still, I didn't want her involved).

Obviously (and I do mean that literally) the talk needs to happen soon. I don't want her to get her period and not have any clue what it is. That would not only be wrong, but I would think pretty scary.

Any advice? How much detail regarding the whole thing do I need to get into?

This is how my mom handled it:

Just tell her the basics, especially about what changes her body is about to go through. Explain honestly about what the other kids told her. Tell her it's normal and it's ok, even if it is uncomfortable, and that she should never be ashamed to talk to you or her dad about it. Use the correct words for parts and processes, and explain any slang terms she may have heard. Answer her questions, if she has any.

A first "birds and bees" talk doesn't have to be extensive, but it does set the tone for future conversations.

Good luck!
